Fill Out Surveys to Earn Money!

A great method of getting a second income is by doing online surveys to earn money. It sounds easy but it isn’t! There are several reasons for this. The main one is that there are a lot of companies out there that will get you to fill in surveys but won’t pay you money and these companies tend to give the online survey industry quite a few headaches by putting genuine people off participating in the industry.

How can I avoid the disreputable companies?

This often entails using a bit of common sense and making sure that you diversify the number of survey companies that you sign up to. To start with you will need to sign up to at least 50 companies. This seems to be the magic number where you will get at least 20 surveys a week ranging from $4 to $9. It’s a slow process but certainly worthwhile.

A useful tool is to keep a record book. List all the surveys you have done, how much was offered, how long you spent on each survey and most importantly when you got paid. The reason for this is simple. You will get to the stage where you may 6 or 7 surveys a day, so you will lose track of what you have done and what you should be paid if you don’t!

I have found this an invaluable tool as I was quickly able to see those companies that paid and paid regularly against those companies that didn’t. The ones that didn’t I just scratched off my list.

I now only have 22 survey companies what do I do?

This is the situation I found myself in. After spending close to 3 weeks in between study and work, I found that out of the list of 49 companies that I had compiled only 22 were regularly paying! Notice I said 22 companies that were regularly paying – the break up was as follows. Out of the 50 companies, 19 never gave me any emails – so I scratched them off the list. I wasn’t paid by 4 (scratched off) and the other 4 paid after 2 months which was a lot later than the 4 weeks of the others (most companies pay every 4 weeks!)

I was in a situation where I needed to get more than 22 – otherwise what was the point of all this? A friend of mine said that you can do surveys to earn money but that you should use a different tactic to the one I was using. She said that she had done the same as me and found that when the number of companies that were paying her dropped she joined a membership site that gave her access to over 500 bona fide, paying companies.

I felt really stupid and wondered why I hadn’t thought of it before. Maybe I was just overworked with the study and work routine and just hadn’t seen the wood for the trees.

Fill a Child With Love and Kindness

My Happy Musing for the day is: Fill a child with enough love to last a lifetime and that child will grow up to do the same.

Love seems to be the answer to almost any question. And there is no question that children need love — lots of it. Some need more than others, yet all of them do better when they are filled with love.

We all know that abused children tend to grow up and continue that abuse with their own children. Better stated might be that abusive adults were usually abused children. Why not the opposite – fill a child with love?

I remember a simple example of this. Long ago I was teaching tennis on private courts in the Malibu Colony, a very exclusive, private area north of Santa Monica. I was working with a recently divorced woman who had just moved into the Colony with her brood of children. It was a disheveled life for the kids as well as for her. Money didn’t solve it.

As we were hitting balls, children kept coming on the court with one problem or another. The mother was distracted in many ways. Then there was one small fellow about four years-old riding a tricycle around on my side of the court. He was sad and lost. I just went over to him and just put my hand on his back. He settled and accepted my kindness. His mother carried on with her disruptive teens. Later she asked me what I had done for her son. I said that I had just loved him.

This experience made an impression on me as a young woman and later when I had my own son I loved him continuously. He is now a young man with a wonderful young woman in his life. She reports to me now and then how kind and loving he is. This makes me smile.

Children, of course, need more than just love. But when love is the underpinnings of their life it will certainly be extended throughout their life and beyond.

“Life is wonderful.”

Threading Your Machine, Filling the Bobbin and Adjusting Tension

1. Put your spool of thread on the spindle on top of the machine.

1a. A vertical spindle or post – position the spool so that the thread runs clockwise as you sew.

1b. A horizontal spindle – the spool is held in place by an end cap. If your spool has a small cut in it, be sure to have the cut to the right.

NEWBIE TIP: If your spool is brand new and there are labels covering the holes, uncover yhour holes completely to allow the spool to turn easily.

2. Pull thread to the left of the spindle and thru your first thread guide.

3. Draw thread down thru your tension guide. (It is extremely important to have your presser foot UP when threading your machine.)

4. Draw thread thru the next thread guide.

5. Insert thread thru the take up lever.

6. Bring thread thru next thread guide.

7. Finally! – thread your needle. Most needles are threaded from front to back, some from left to right.

Practise threading your machine. It is no small chore if you are a beginner, but after a while you will be able to do this with your eyes closed.

WINDING YOUR BOBBIN – THE NEXT STEP

Follow the instructions from your manual carefully when winding your bobbin.

If your bobbin case is built in, the bobbin will be wound in place with the machine fully threaded.

Removable bobbins are wound on the top or side of the machine. Your machine must be threaded before bobbin filling.

Your bobbin thread must be drawn thru the tension spring. For wind in place bobbins, this is already taken care of. You MUST make sure this is done if you are using a bobbin that already has thread in it.

BALANCING THE TENSION:

Balancing your tension is a huge issue when you first start to learn about your sewing machine. There is nothing that will cause you more grief than your tension.

Your stitch is formed by interlocking the bobbin and needle thread. Every time the needle goes down, a hook catches the needle thread and wraps the bobbin thread around it. It is a tug of war that must be synchronized for a good stitch result.

If your needle thread tension is stronger, your bobbin thread will be pulled to the top of your fabric. If your bobbin thread tension is stronger, the needle thread will be visible on the underside of your fabric. When the tension is just right and evenly balanced, the stitch will lock in the middle, halfway between the top and bottom of your fabric. This is what you want and have to find. It might take some playing around with your tension guide, but worth the extra bit of time it takes.

TEST – TEST- TEST

The easiest way to test your tension is to thread your machine and put one colour thread in your machine with a totally different colour in your bobbin. Neither one should match your fabric. You need to examine your stitches.

If your tension is too tight, you will see your bobbin thread on top.

If your tension is too loose, you will see your top thread on the bottom of the fabric.

If your tension is correct, you will see machine thread only on the top of the fabric and bobbin thread only on the underside of the fabric.

MAKING ADJUSTMENTS:

BEFORE you start adjusting your tension, make these three checks. This is very important.

1. Be certain your machine is threaded properly. Even long time sew-ers can miss a thread guide.

2. Be sure your bobbin is properly installed.

3. Make sure your needle is inserted properly.

After going thru the three checks, you may have to adjust the tension in order to sew a good stitch. Check your manual to see how this is done. Each time you have adjusted, sew a line of stitching. You should only have to make small, slight adjustments to correct your stitch.

If after what seems like an eternity of changes, you still don’t have a balanced stitch, leave your machine. Don’t even look at it for a few hours, maybe a day or so. Then go back and try again. It could be you are tired, frustrated or distracted. It happens to all of us.

Or, it could be that your bobbin needs adjusting. Most sewing machine manufacturers don’t want you to adjust your bobbin tension. If your manual doesn’t cover this area, then it is best to take your sewing machine in to a dealer or reputable repair man.

Happy Sewing!

More Customers For Your Restaurant? Three Key Strategies For Filling Those Seats Seven Days a Week

Does your restaurant have too many empty seats, especially early in the week? Is your wait staff frustrated because they’re not making much in tips? Yes, people are tightening their belts, but there are still plenty who go out to eat, especially when properly motivated. Read on for some strategies that will increase the odds that they’ll eat at YOUR restaurant!

So how can you make them come to you? And how can you turn walk-ins into repeat customers or regulars? After all, regulars are the lifeblood of any restaurant. Imagine how much you have to spend to get one new customer. Wouldn’t it be helpful to make that customer come back over and over and over again?

There are many factors that contribute to filling those seats, but in today’s restaurant marketing tips, I’m going to discuss three the key principles that can make a huge difference in your business:

1. Offer excellent food and service

Okay, this one’s obvious, but let’s mention it anyway. The restaurant must be the kind of place where people love to eat, which means great food, great atmosphere, and great service. If any one of those is lacking, no amount of web marketing wizardry will make much of a difference. But then, any good restaurant prides itself in its excellent food and service, right? And, of course, the ambience needs to be pleasant as well.

2. Make sure your website works for you

In a sluggish economy, this feature is more important than ever. Sure, growth is great, but even for business to remain stable, a restaurant needs a website that people can actually find. And it would be even better if it’s one that makes them want to return frequently to check what great new treats they might be able to find on their next visit.

What does it mean for a website to be findable. Does it mean that when someone Googles “Golden Dragon Diner” it will appear on page 1? While we certainly would hope that they’ll be able to find the Golden Dragon Diner that way, that’s not really what “findable” is all about.

Instead, try Googling “Richmond Chinese Restaurant.” Does the Golden Dragon Diner still appear on page 1 of the results?

Yes? Congratulations. That website works.

No? That website is not doing its job.

The key is to help the kind of people find you who don’t already know your name but who are looking for Chinese food (in our example). If you have an Italian restaurant, obviously, you’ll want to score for something like “Richmond Italian Restaurant” or even “West End Italian Restaurant,” depending on where you’re located, not just for “Trattoria Lucca” or whatever the restaurant’s name may be.

3. Make them come back often

Make them come back often – and bring all their friends. Don’t let those one-time customers that just found you leave without being able to lure them back. You need an automated “customer retrieval system,” also known as autoresponder, along with a newsletter.

This sounds simple enough, but in the age of spam complaints, you have to make sure you set it up correctly. If you use my favorite autoresponder, you’re practically guaranteed to do so because it simply won’t let you do it any other way.

Still, that’s only half the equation. For this system to work properly, you also need to know what to write those friendly and enticing emails.

Green Plumbing Design Meets Toilet Fill Valve Repair

Today I want to talk to you about green plumbing design and a great new product for toilet fill valve repair called the Hydroclean. I recently met the inventor of the Hydroclean, a fourth-generation plumber named Michael Schuster. Michael has come up with one of the most well thought out new products I’ve seen in a long time. This newly designed toilet fill valve saves water, and I mean lots of water, which is a wonderful thing in today’s drought conscious environment. But it does more than just save water, it also alerts you when it’s time to replace a leaking toilet flapper; it cleans the inside of your toilet tank with every flush and even installs without tools.

Toilet Mechanics 101- The Flush

In order to understand exactly how the Hydroclean saves water it is first necessary to understand exactly how a toilet works. Most residential toilets are the tank type variety. A tank type toilet works by using water that is stored in the tank to flush the contents of the bowl into the drainage piping system. The basic chain of events that happen when you flush the toilet are as follows: water is stored in the tank, when you push the flush lever it raises the flapper in the bottom of the toilet tank, water from the toilet tank flows into the bowl through the opening beneath the flapper, waste in the bowl is washed through the outlet into the drain piping by the extra water that is added.

Toilet Mechanics 102- The Fill

While all this is happening the fill valve float drops, opening the fill valve while the flapper closes allowing the tank to start refilling. At the same time the refill tube on the fill valve now sends water to the bowl through the overflow tube in the tank. When the tank is full the float raises and shuts off the fill valve. This is all fairly simple if you know the sequence.

The Problem- The Refill Tube

The problem arises because the bowl fills at the same time as the tank and frequently the bowl is completely full before the tank. Once the bowl is full the rest of the water that comes through the refill tube just runs down the drain and is wasted.Unfortunately, most fill valves have no way to adjust the refill rate to the bowl to prevent this from happening.

The Solution- The Mini Valve

The inventor of Hydroclean has come up with a solution to this problem. The Hydroclean has an adjustable valve on the refill tube to allow you to calibrate the amount of water that is being used to refill the bowl. This allows each toilet to be adjusted precisely for the correct amount of water to refill the bowl. This one, simple refinement qualifies the Hydroclean as a green plumbing design which has the potential to save millions of gallons a year with widespread use.

See For Yourself

By now you may be asking yourself whether or not you’re wasting enough water to need a Hydroclean. It’s fairly simple to find out for yourself if you follow the steps below.

Step one, before flushing mark the water level in your toilet bowl with a pencil. Step two, remove the refill tube from the overflow tube in the tank and direct the flow from the refill tube into a separate container. A one quart freezer bag works well. Step three, flush the toilet. Step four, capture the water from the refill tube in the container. After the flush is complete check the water level in the bowl. Step five, slowly add water from the container to bring the water level in the bowl up to your pencil mark. Step six, measure the water left in the container. This is how much water is being wasted with every flush.

What A Waste!

If you would like to take this one step further you can calculate how much water is being wasted on a yearly basis. First of all determine how many times a day your toilet is flushed. By the way, the national average is eight times per day. Now multiply the amount of water (in ounces) that is left in your container by the number of times per day your toilet is flushed, then multiply that total by 365 (the number of days in a year) and then divide that total by 128 (the number of ounces in a gallon). This will tell you how many gallons of water your inefficient toilet is wasting on a yearly basis. If you’re curious as to what that’s costing in dollars and cents, just call your water department or check your water bill to find out how much are paying for a gallon of water. Don’t forget the sewer charges are if you are on public sewer.. You may be surprised at the answer.

Listen For A Leak

Another great feature of the Hydroclean is its ability to alert you to a leaking flapper in your toilet tank. The Hydroclean is a little noisier than other fill valves and the valve itself opens with a very definite, positive opening. So if your flapper is leaking the water level in your tank will slowly drop, causing the valve to open. The noise when this happens will is the indication that you have a problem in your tank. Don’t misunderstand me, it’s not so loud as to be a nuisance. You’re probably not going to hear it over the children during the day, but at night it will be a dead giveaway.

It Even Cleans The Tank

I also mentioned that the Hydroclean cleans the toilet with every flush. This is accomplished by an extra refill tube which is routed along the bottom of your tank to the opposite side from the fill valve. This means that every time the toilet is flushed water is introduced into the toilet tank from several different points openings along that tube, creating a flow of water across the tank bottom and washing out any debris.

Look Ma, No Tools

Another feature of the hydroplane is that it installs without tools, although you may need a pair of channel locks to remove your old valve, the new one is tightened by hand only with a really unique nut design that doesn’t audibly clicks when it gets tight. This is a big benefit to the installer as it eliminates the guesswork and prevents over tightening, which could possibly damage the tank.

My hat is off to Michael Schuster and his Hydroclean toilet fill valve repair kit. It is refreshing to find a new product that lives up to it’s marketing claims and I can say from personal experience that the Hydroclean does just that. I did the test on just one of my toilets and I’m now using 525 gallons less water per year. And the great part is that I didn’t have to sacrifice any performance to do so. You can bet I’m planning to check the rest of my toilets this week. As far as I am concerned, Hydroclean is a no brainer!

Tantalizing Cherry Cobbler

Ingredients you will need for the Fruit Filling:

2 Pounds of fresh pitted cherries if they are in season, or use

2- 16 ounce cans of cherry pie filling if they are not.

1 Cup of sugar only to be used if you are using the fresh pitted cherries.

** If you are not using the fresh cherries do not use the sugar it will be, too sweet**

1/4 Cup of cold water

1-2 Tablespoons of cornstarch for desired thickness

1/4 Teaspoon of vanilla bean paste

Now you will need to assemble your fruit filling:

Fresh Cherry Filling: You will need to add the water, cornstarch and mix in a mixing bowl. You will then add the vanilla extract, and mix with the cornstarch slurry. Add your cherries, and sugar, and mix all of the ingredients together. The cornstarch will thicken the fruit filling during cooking. There are many different recipes I have seen that require you to boil the fruit mixture before you add it to the pan. It is not necessary to do this, it will still do the same while baking. And your fresh cherries will not get overcooked during the boiling process. This is a much better method, and it saves you time.

Canned Cherry Filling: If you are going to use canned cherries these are the steps you will follow. First you will add some water to a mixing bowl. You will not use all of the water listed above. I would use about half of that, or about 2-3 ounces of cold water. I would then add my cornstarch and mix well. Then you add the vanilla bean paste. Remember if you are using the canned cherry filling you will not use the sugar.

Ingredients for the dough topping:

1 Cup of all purpose flour

2 Teaspoons of baking powder

2 Tablespoons of sugar

1/4 Teaspoon of salt

1/4 cup of butter

1/2 Cup of milk

1 Large egg

Lets make our dough:

First you will need to preheat your oven to 375 if it is a gas oven, and about 400 if it is an electric oven. I have a Kitchen Aid Professional mixer with a dough hook, and this is what I use while making my bread doughs. I know that there are many different types of equipment out there for making doughs, so just use one that will work for you. You can always do it the old fashioned way like my grandma, I just can’t part with that much time these days.

You will need to combine your flour( I always sift mine, it was how I learned to do all of my baking) sugar, and baking powder, and salt into your mixer. I would get the machine ready to go, and start adding small amounts butter to start cutting in your fat. In another bowl I would add the egg, and milk and whisk until frothy. After they are both mixed in separate bowls you will start to add the wet to your dry ingredients. You will need a spatula to scrape down the sides of the mixing bowl. Mix until the ingredients are starting to combine, but don’t over mix.

Now it is time to put it all together: Add your cherry filling to an 8-10 baking pan. You will need to find something to scoop out your dough mixture into small dough balls. A spoon will work fine, but I like to use a small ice cream scoop, it just makes for a little better presentation. After you start scooping out the dough you will place the balls on top of the cobbler. You can make a design, or do a random drop.

You will need to turn half way through baking to insure even cooking. The approximate cook time is 25-30 minutes. The reason for the approximate cook time is due to everyone’s oven is different, so make sure you keep an eye out on you wonderful dessert. Enjoy!

How To Really Fill Your Vacant Lots

I can remember when a good, well-located community could fill seven or eight lots per month with nothing more than some flyers at a manufactured home dealership. To even say such things today dates you as someone from the dinosaur age. And unless you’ve been in a cave, you know that you are lucky to fill one lot per year in that manner today.

So how do you fill vacant lots in your community? Well, a lot differently than you did in the past – and it takes a whole lot more effort. But you’ll find that once you put your program together, it will turn your life and spirits around to see new homes coming in to those old, dusty lots.

If you have been reading at all for the last seven or eight years, you are pretty familiar with the industry “chattel crisis”. Basically, it was the sub-prime mess of today, only fully focused on manufactured homes. People bought homes they could not afford, and they went back to the lenders in record numbers. As a result, lenders don’t do “easy” lending any more on manufactured homes, and the sales have suffered enormously as a result. Dealers that were selling 10 or 20 houses a month in 1998 are now lucky to sell 2 or3. And very few of those homes end up in land lease communities – they almost always end up on private land. So to fill your vacant lots, you have to forget about those dealerships filling you up, and take control of your destiny yourself.

These are my ideas for filling up your vacant lots in the real-world of today:

· Become the #1 community for new home dealers. Am I contradicting myself? No, those dealerships do sell an occasional unit that goes into a land lease community, so you can’t ignore them altogether. To get any fill rate from these guys, you have to make sure that you have a 100% closing rate on any inquiry for a lot. Make sure that you have flyers at every dealer, as well as an attractive “move-in special” program to entice customers. And call each sales manager or salesman periodically to let them know you really want their business.

· See if those same dealers would want to move some inventory into your community and sell it on location. When I went to buy my stick-built house, I choose a location I wanted, and then inspected the available inventory for sale on MLS. Why shouldn’t manufactured home buyers do the same thing? Instead of having some used or new inventory gathering dust on the sales lot, see if the dealership would have any interest siting a couple units in your community and advertise them as a “location sale”. That’s how every other form of housing is sold. We convinced a dealer in Oklahoma to try it, and he sold six units in this first year! You will probably have to give the dealer free lot rent until the unit is sold – that’s a small price to pay.

· Locate those individuals who like to buy and sell or rent manufactured homes, and see if they will bring in inventory to your community. Sometimes referred to as “Lonnie deals”, named after Lonnie Scruggs who wrote the book “Deals on Wheels”, these are transactions where someone purchases a manufactured home and then re-sells it or rents it for a profit. Many of these homes begin life in the older inventory section of a dealer, or on private land, and are then initially moved into a community. Make sure that your community is where they go. You can find these “Lonnie” individuals by driving through other communities looking for “For Sale” or “For Rent” signs that share the same phone number, or by asking the local dealers and home movers. We have one individual who has brought in about 40 homes to date under this system. Again, you will have to give the “Lonnie” individual free rent until it sells. Big deal.

· Bring in homes yourself, and then rent or sell them. It’s not that difficult. You buy them from a dealer, or from a broker, or even new from a manufacturer. You then either sell them or rent them once they are set up in your community. Two things to watch out for in this scenario 1) you must get a dealer’s license in most states and 2) it takes a lot of capital. Just bringing the home in, setting it up, and skirting it can cost about $3,000.

· Convince residents from competing communities to move over to yours. I’ve left this idea for last, since it causes hard-feelings between community owners (and rightfully so!), and can cause a dangerous catch-22 situation where community owners are constantly trying to steal each other’s customers. There are two times in which I have used this system, and both were special situations that were not quite as bad as just going after the other guy’s tenants. The first is when a competing property is being closed down for new development. In those events, the minute you hear about it, go to the community that is being shut down and tell the manager or owner that you want all of his customers and are willing to pay for the whole move, or part of the move, just to get their business. I once scored 35 homes out of a community closing for the development of Home Depot using this very approach.

Normally, the owner of the community that is closing is more than happy to have an option to send his folks. The other time that it is proper to consider trying to obtain customers en masse is when there is a community that is truly doing a terrible job, and the residents want out badly. The reasons can be numerous – frequent water or sewer outages, poor management, a location that has become unsafe, the list is endless. You normally find out about such an opportunity when several tenants come to your property suddenly, wanting to move over. In those cases, I tell folks to tell all their friends that we would be happy to take them, or even send a flyer letting people know that if they want to move their home, we would love to have them. You can sometimes pick up 10 or 20 new residents by doing this.

Until industry sales improve, these proactive steps are essential for filling your vacancies, and getting your community on a strong financial footing. Don’t wait by the phone for a dealer to call – put this plan into motion today!

Bean Bag Filling Research

Doing a little background research on the different types of fillings of bean bags will help you make a more educated purchase when buying your next bean bag, helping you to obtain a even more comfortable and fun ‘beanie’. Let’s take a look at the different types of fillings for these little wonders:

The traditional bean bag is usually stuffed with polystyrene beads that ensure that light and comfortable feeling when sitting on one. The capability of these beans is that it resists compression and the pressure when seated on it and molds to the shape of your own physique and movements of your body. Many would know that in this ‘recipe’ lies the secret of comfort that is provided with a good quality bean bag!

Now you might ask how polystyrene beads are constructed. Years back a company named Dow manufactured the first batch of polystyrene beads, or more commonly known as Styrofoam. To make large blocks of the polystyrene, plastics are mixed with various other chemicals, which produce an expandable resin, called EPS. This product is then subjected to heat, which causes it to turn into very light and durable beads, which are used for the bean bag filling.

In manufacturing the Styrofoam beans, the plastics that are used, comes in two types, recycled or virgin. The beauty of bean bag filling is that recycled products like plastic drinking bottles can be used to fill the bag. Contrary to belief, there isn’t a huge difference between the qualities of virgin or recycled beads. The only difference is the source of materials used in the manufacturing. An age old debate is still going about which one of the beads are more comfortable and can withstand the most wear and tear, but in the end, it is dictated by everyone’s own preference.

Since there are new inventions of all sorts everyday, a new type of bean bag filling has seen the light.
